BC Instagram Shake Out Get Ready 1080x1080

Emily Carr is a registered participant in ShakeOut BC on Oct. 19. ShakeOut BC is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer during big earthquakes and ensure that we all "Drop, Cover, and Hold On."

British Columbia is one of the most active seismic faults in the world, with over several thousand earthquakes recorded annually. Devastating quakes in Japan, Turkey, New Zealand, Chile, Indonesia, and the 6.0 magnitude earthquake off Vancouver Island last April have made it clear how important it is to be prepared to mitigate negative outcomes. The most at-risk regions of B.C. are those along the west coast, where there is also a high risk of a tsunami.

What should you do when an earthquake strikes?

  1. DROP - Get under a sturdy piece of furniture.
  2. COVER - Protect your head and neck.
  3. HOLD ON - Hold on during the shaking and wait 60 seconds before coming out.

During the event, you will hear instructions from the speakers to take cover for up to two minutes in response to a simulated earthquake event that starts at 10:19 am. ECU will participate alongside millions of people worldwide, practising how to Drop, Cover and Hold On during the Great ShakeOut drill.

After the drill, please resume your activities.
