Community Initiatives

Members of the ECU community have created a number of projects and activities that advance the common aim of a more equitable and inclusive university. Any initiative that provides support or advocacy for members of our community is welcome.

We're committed to sharing and amplifying the grassroots initiatives of our community. The university does not claim any ownership over the independent initiatives listed below.

This is a living list of resources, and we recognize that it is very much incomplete. We invite you to submit your own additions at the bottom of this page.

Aboriginal Student Collective

The Aboriginal Student Collective’s goal is to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment to Aboriginal students, encouraging community, enriching cultural identity and gathering strength through learning.

The collective members participate in social and recreational activities as well as support special events on campus.

BIPOC Students Union

The BIPOC Students' Union was created to advocate for, celebrate and empower ECU students who are Black, Indigenous and people of colour.

Social Practice Kitchen

The Social Practice Kitchen is a group of students with diverse cultural backgrounds and artistic practices at Emily Carr University. They are seeking to connect students, staff, faculty and community members through shared food and culture.

Emily Queers

Emily Queers aims to create an inclusive space for members of the LGTBQA+ (LGBTQQIP2SAA) community to share ideas, participate in discussions, spark activism, educate and foster a safe environment on campus.

Discussing Design + Decolonization (by Request)

This is a small collection of videos prepared by Garnet Hertz, Canada Research Chair in Design and Media Art at Emily Carr. These videos provide walk-throughs of papers and concepts related to decolonization and were primarily designed to provide accessible overviews of academic-oriented texts for faculty and students at Emily Carr University.

How to Submit Your Initiative

We invite students, staff and faculty to submit community initiatives that further equity, diversity and inclusion, including any anti-racism, decolonization and community-building efforts. Please include a brief description and a URL for each submission.
