In October and November, 2020, President + Vice-Chancellor Gillian Siddall hosted 12 listening sessions that were open to any member of the Emily Carr community. These sessions were an opportunity to discuss experiences of racism and discrimination at ECU, and share ideas and suggestions for how to transform the university.

All sessions were documented by President Siddall and themes were identified in a summary, which is available to read and download here.

In the Fall of 2021 and Winter of 2022, the consulting group, ROOTS (Reclaiming Our Own Truths & Stories), engaged in a three-stage process that involved some faculty and staff members of our community participating in a series of self-identified affinity groups. The process was supported by ECU¡¯s NSERC EDI Capacity Building Grant and involved the consultants offering an introductory webinar series, hosting various circle dialogue spaces in which the group of participants were asked: 1. How is Emily Carr acting or participating in oppressive ways? and 2. What could Emily Carr do better to support efforts to dismantle oppression?, and providing a follow up survey to staff and faculty who participated in the process. The resulting report contains a summary of what the consultants heard from the participants, and ideas for how ECU could address this work going forward.

A ECUAD Colonial Audit Framework (January 2021)

This document constitutes a framework for a colonial audit. It is intended to outline the purpose, components, and context of a colonial audit, with recommendations for conducting the audit in a good way that cares for those most affected by colonialism, as well as those participating in and conducting the audit. The framework and recommendations provided here are non-exhaustive.

Colonialism pervades all institutions in Canada. Any organization wishing to undertake meaningful Reconciliation work should first undertake an audit to determine what colonial impact the organization has had, and what aspects of the organization continue to uphold colonialism.

The 2020 National Dialogues and Action for Inclusive Higher Education and Communities took place on October 1 and 2, 2020.

Racism: Problems and Solutions Documentaries are a series of videos from the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, highlighting the personal stories of individuals who have dealt with racism and discrimination. The series is intended to inspire conversation and generate support for continued advocacy.
